Getting Started

Connect Semfora to Claude Code in 2 Minutes

Set up semantic code intelligence for your AI coding assistant. No proxy layer needed—Semfora speaks MCP natively over stdio.

Direct MCP, No Proxy

Unlike some setups, Semfora's MCP server runs directly—no proxy layer needed. The semfora-engine serve command speaks MCP natively over stdio, making configuration simple and performance fast.
1

Install Semfora Engine

# One-line install (macOS/Linux)
curl -fsSL https://sh.semfora.com/install.sh | bash

# Verify installation
semfora-engine --version
2

Configure Your AI Tool

Run the CLI setup wizard to automatically detect and configure MCP for your AI tools:

# Interactive CLI setup wizard
semfora-engine setup

# The wizard will:
# 1. Detect installed AI tools (Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code)
# 2. Configure MCP server for each tool
# 3. Verify the configuration works

What the Setup Wizard Does

The setup wizard auto-detects installed AI tools, writes the correct MCP configuration, and verifies everything works. It handles config file locations and permissions automatically.

Manual Configuration

Prefer to configure manually? Add the MCP server config to your tool's settings:

Add to your ~/.claude/mcp.json:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "semfora-engine": {
      "command": "semfora-engine",
      "args": ["serve"]
    }
  }
}

Multiple Projects?

For multi-project setups, you can configure multiple MCP servers pointing to different directories by running the setup command from each project root directory.
3

Try It Out

Restart your AI tool and try a simple prompt. Semfora automatically indexes your codebase and provides semantic understanding:

"Can you tell me about my codebase?"

This automatically indexes your code (if needed), detects frameworks, maps the architecture, and gives you a complete overview.

Automatic Indexing

You don't need to manually index. Semfora auto-indexes on first use and keeps the index fresh as you edit files—no manual re-indexing needed.
4

More Things to Try

Just ask naturally. Semfora understands what you need:

"Find all authentication code"

"What would break if I change this function?"

"Review my uncommitted changes"

"Are there any duplicate functions?"

"Show me how the API routes work"
